Cancer Research UK — Shining Stars

Thanking supporters with shining stories of hope

Just in time for Christmas, we came up with a unique way to showcase the many heartwarming stories Cancer Research UK use to thank their supporters. ‘Shining Stories’ used some gorgeous in-browser animation to make a special thank you all the more special.

There is, of course, no better way to say thank you to your supporters than by showing them inspiring real-life stories of triumph their donations create. But, with so many case studies presented over the years, how were we to make these fresh and interesting, and encourage people to explore?

Our answer was Shining Stories — a beautiful interactive constellation of festive stars, in the shape of the iconic new “C” logo, which people could explore to read about the amazing achievements their donations had made possible.

Adding some sparkle

Yes, Shining Stories looks like a simple set of stars, twinkling in the night sky. But it’s actually a whole lot more complex — with a parallax canvas providing the depth of space, and each of the stars reacting individually to mouse movements.

And to complete the campaign, we made it easy for supporters to share the stories — and spread some Christmas cheer to their friends.

Stars in your hand

One key requirement was to make sure the experience was just as rewarding for tablets and mobile devices. This required some clever optimisation of the animations — so that wherever Cancer Research UK’s supporters were this Christmas, they could enjoy a few Shining Stories.
