British Heart Foundation — Patient Information Films

A new look for BHF and a new way of explaining heart conditions

In July 2018 BHF rolled out their new brand identity. In the 6 months leading up to the launch, we worked with the patient information team to create a suite of 8 animations explaining various heart conditions and treatments.

At the outset of the project we dedicated time to working closely with the BHF content and clinical teams to ensure that our outline scripts were medically accurate. In this phase, we also developing a heart animation study, to find the right balance between anatomical correctness, clarity of visual communication and aesthetic appeal.

With these foundations in place, we set about injecting personality through the illustration style and scripting to ensure the films resonate with the target audience. We achieved this by introducing characters that patients could relate to, and applying the new brand's 'fearless' tone of voice, whilst also being considerate of the circumstances in which many of the audience would be watching the films, following a recent diagnosis of themselves or a family member.

Throughout the production process we had regular check ins with the branding agency to ensure that the work aligned with the brand work they were finalising.

Once completed, the suite of films were released on the Heart Conditions pages of the new BHF website, and social cutdowns were also produced. Both the client and branding agency were incredibly pleased with the work (as are we!), which has set a bar for future animation work for the charity, and at the time of writing we are already working on the next batch of condition and treatment films.
